Services
This small engineering company was headquartered in the Maybeck Building at 1736 Stockton Street in San Francisco. It was renamed Shapiro and Okino, Engineers when, in 1966, Harry Okino, C.E. joined as a partner. Over the next several years, the firm served the public and private sectors in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, providing seismic resistant design for new buildings, and seismic evaluation and rehabilitation design of existing buildings.Within a short time, the firm established a solid reputation within the community.
SOHA has been a leading designer of deep excavation shoring and underpinning. Our development of the innovative eccentric soldier pile/tieback connection has been widely imitated, and has resulted in substantial cost savings for both project owners and contractors. SOHA's services to the construction industry include temporary support of existing structures during renovation, repair, or seismic upgrade.

I needed to hire a structural engineer to help me deal with a neighbor's construction that had undermined my house's foundation. Another engineer recommended SOHA, so I called them. I talked to Art Dell at SOHA, and I ended up hiring SOHA to help me deal with a difficult problem. SOHA is a down town engineering firm that works on a lot of big projects (the Bay Bridge, new schools, big commercial buildings) so I worried that my little project might get overlooked, but I shouldn't have worried.

Art answered every question I asked in a timely way, and he was always available to review plans, make suggestions, and do site visits. I ended up hiring SOHA to design the underpinning of my house and to take bids from contractors, and to oversee the contractor's work. SOHA was fantastic, the project came in ahead of schedule and on budget. The main thing that was important to me is that the SOHA team really understood what they were doing, their plans reflected careful and thorough work, and they were able to communicate all the relevant issues to me and to the contractor. SOHA's services are not cheap, but they were very willing to go the extra mile to help me stick to a budget on my project.

The two people I dealt with at SOHA were both supremely professional and knowledgeable. If you have a structural engineering issue and you want to be sure the job is properly engineered and designed, talk to SOHA.
